Getting the Right Employees

Economists say that the economy is on the verge of getting ready to start picking up again. When that time comes, employers may need help with filtering through the deluge of candidates who will be eager to start working. The overall goal is still the same: find the person who is the most capable and the most willing to do the job being offered. There are some ways to filter out the good from the best candidates for the job.

Grades Are Good, But Not Everything

Our current culture is still feeling the expectation of a previous generation that believed that a good education was all you needed to succeed. Unfortunately, the past five years have shown that this is not the case. Plumbers with a technical school education are staying in business while law and other graduate students with bachelors and higher degrees are doing good to find employment at Starbucks. While good grades can indicate good traits about a person, they are not everything. Some students may have had a rough semester or two that brought their GPA down. They may have had to work while in school and didn't have enough time to properly study. Ultimately the bottom line is that it is not how well people do on a written test that makes the difference. It is whether they can do the job.

Online Media Is a Good Place to Collect Potential Candidates

With the explosion of social media, the number of recruiting tools has increased dramatically. From Facebook and Twitter, which tell others about the applicant's personal lives, to LinkedIn and other professional job-seeking/networking sites, the list of tools is growing fast. The internet is a great way to find and exchange information. Especially when these recruiting tools are used in connection with each other, they can give a lot of information about possible job applicants.

Audition Prospective Candidates

One of the least utilized recruiting tools is the audition. An audition is where a candidate comes in and demonstrates his or her ability to do part of what will be expected of them at the job. This approach may take more time to set up, but it is a very reliable indicator of how the person will react to the actual job. A lot of people can fake an image or have the "right" answers to interview questions. However, putting a person in the situation that they will have to face at the job will tell a lot and be invaluable when compared to other recruiting tools.
