College may seem like the last step on your road to a job but it's not always an automatic entry into your career. You have to have a plan. It will take effort and tenacity but even in the down economy, it's within your reach. Here are some resources that can help you find your first entry-level position after graduation.

Job Fairs

Higher education institutions do all they can to ensure their graduates are employed after graduation. One of the ways they do this is by assisting companies in the recruiting process. Every year or even every six months, many universities and colleges hold job fairs. These are geared specifically toward new graduates, and a recent study by Jobs.com showed that more than 30 percent of the people that applied at a job fair got a call back. You can meet recruiting representatives, get information and even submit applications. This is probably one of the best ways to find a job directly out of college. If your school offers this opportunity you should absolutely take advantage of it.

Online Sites

Job fairs are not the only way to find career opportunities. There are several online sites that have job listings and will allow individuals to submit their resumes for consideration. If this is the route you are taking, be sure to apply to as many jobs as possible within your field. There is a great deal of competition for jobs in the current market. Companies are recruiting new and fresh faces everyday but you have to be proactive in the search. Be sure your resume stands out from the rest. There are services that will help with this in the counseling department at your school.

Internships From College

When recruiting new talent companies will often consider individuals who have already worked with them as an intern. If you have the opportunity it is important to do a minimum of at least one internship before graduating. This will give you an edge over other applicants. You may find the internship leads to a job or at the very least can provide you with relevant recommendations by your superiors.

When graduating from college it is important to use all the resources that are at your disposal. Go to job fairs, use online resources and utilize internship opportunities. The job market is competitive and you have to be sure you're doing all you can do to get your foot in the door. With a little effort and know how you'll be entering the work force in no time.
