Is Your Technology Designed for Recruiters?

Talent management is a relatively vague term that is meant to include a number of processes related to recruiting and hiring employees-plus a lot more. In fact, for many companies, talent management is becoming so broad that it's almost synonymous with Human Resources. And that is worrisome for recruiters, particularly if they are forced to use bulky talent management software suites.

Here's the reason: Many vendors that offer talent management technology have simply bit off more than they can chew. Instead of focusing on the daily tasks of a recruiter, they try to run the gamut of Human Resources functions, from learning and performance management, to compensation, and beyond. And that can actually be more of a hindrance to a recruiter than a help.

Recruiters focus solely on the acquisition part of talent management. That's all. It stands to reason, then, that they need technology designed to innovate in areas like sourcing, candidate relationship management, and social recruiting. They don't need large-scale management software built (or often lumped together through acquisition) to serve generic Human Resources personnel.

Sure, it might sound great to have one system that theoretically does everything. But when you begin amassing bundles of technology and knitting them together to form a talent management software suite you can presumably sell for more money-and force companies to become dependent on-you do not have much left over in the way of resources to focus on innovation. You're focusing on integrating bits and pieces, and you're strategizing on sales. You're not spending days considering how recruiters can work more efficiently, and you're not spending time investigating new ways to interact with employees and evangelize your employment brand.

That's not something you can risk in today's competitive job market. Savvy recruiters need best-of-breed technology that keeps pace with the trends in candidate acquisition. Unlike talent management software that's haphazardly thrown together, a truly comprehensive recruiting platform focuses on helping recruiters find talent aggressively, incorporating the latest trends. Technology designed for recruiters understands the importance of nurturing and engaging prospects-either through the application and hiring processes, or as part of a larger, long-term talent pool. These are elements you are unlikely to encounter in anything broadly labeled as talent management software. Now is a great time to look at the talent management software you're either considering or have already implemented, and ask yourself: How does it help me, as a recruiter? Am I able to work better using this technology? If the answer is no, it might be time to start shopping.
